Hey y'all! I just wanted to start with telling you a little bit about myself. I'm an Educational Technology Specialist from South Florida. I have been married to a wonderful man, Josh, for just under a year now and we have a dog that I just adore. In my free time I enjoy reading, watching crime shows, walking outdoors, and baking treats for my high schoolers.
I'm going to shoot straight with you - I didn't know a thing about Inauguration Day until I started doing a little research this year. I'm a young college grad and until this year, I didn't really get involved in the presidential election. Sure I voted in the first one that I was able to at age 20, but I was heavily influenced by those around me and those whose opinions I valued. This year I decided that I wanted to do my own research, form my own opinions, and vote for the candidate that I thought was best.
Don't worry - I'm not going to talk politics in this post! One concept I did learn about and become interested in, though, was Inauguration Day. Does anyone else find it interesting that we vote for a candidate in November and then basically just sit around for 2 months while we almost have two presidents? I know that there is probably a really great explanation for why it is done this way, but I didn't understand it.
I share all of this with you so that you can see the importance of teaching about Inauguration Day. It only comes around once every 4 years, but it is important for students to understand what is going on. There are many events that take place around this day, and some interesting information and facts about how different Presidents handled and gave their inauguration speeches.
Politics can sometimes lead to chaos and tough conversations in the classroom, but I think that this is an important topic to discuss with students so that they understand what is going on in our government and how it affects the world that they live in.
I have found a few websites that I think will help you teach students about this topic. They are:
- Inauguration Day Facts & Vocabulary
- Inaugural Quiz
- Inauguration Day Facts
- Great Teacher Resources & Student Activities
- Inauguration Q&A
